Closed Captioning on Television

closed captioning errors on television

these programs are in no particular order, the notes I made on errors in captioning are incomplete, but in an effort to 'encourage' better closed captioning, the mistakes and possible corrections are listed here. I understand the difficulties in stenocaptioning. I know why certain errors happened. But that doesn't mean these captions shouldn't be proofread. Most errors I cite could easily have been found by proofing--the original program audio or video was not even needed.

the BBCA programs are consistently captioned well with verbatim transcription. this channel makes you wish shows such as Midsomer Murders were broadcast by BBCA rather than A&E, which does not caption them.

comments: this 6-part 2004 series has the kind of captions that warm the heart--verbatim, easy to read, well placed, all music and sound effects noted.

program: House Invaders, Changing Rooms

comments: these programs have been consistently well-captioned for several years.

program: The Saint
broadcast by: BBCA
produced by: ITC
captioned by: no captions
comments: it's a great pity that this 1967-1969 series is airing without captions. the program is like new--imaculate with beautifully saturated color. if it was remastered, captions may have been added for the U.K. but lost in the transmission.
