Closed Captioning on Television

closed captioning errors on television

These programs are in no particular order, the notes I made on errors in captioning are incomplete, but in an effort to 'encourage' better closed captioning, the mistakes and possible corrections are listed here. I understand the difficulties in stenocaptioning. I know why certain errors happened. But that doesn't mean these captions shouldn't be proofread. Most errors I cite could easily have been found by proofing--the original program audio or video was not even needed.

program: MacGyver
broadcast on: Spike TV, TV Land
produced by: 1998 Greystone

comments: this 1985-1992 series is running on both cable channels without captions. Either it was never captioned (unlikely) or both stations are running time-compressed episodes.

program: JAG
broadcast by: NBC, CBS, USA
captioned by: see below
comments: the early seasons of this series which began in 1995 were rather poorly captioned by USA cable network. the captions are not verbatim, and with scripts obviously available, have odd transcription errors.

the newer episodes have been captioned by wgbh access for Paramount and CBS. these are excellent work-- verbatim, readable captions with marine corps and navy slang accurately represented.
